The Builder Behind the Brand

David Kane — 20+ Years Building What Others Only Promise.

From overseeing 2,800+ homes at one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected builders, to a decade sailing the world, to building his own vineyard estate on San Juan Island — David brings an uncommon standard to every project.

Senior Project Manager, CamWest Development — 1996–2005

From 1996 to 2005, David served as Senior Project Manager at CamWest Development — one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected private homebuilders, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. Founded in 1989 by Eric Campbell, CamWest grew into a regional force, delivering hundreds of homes annually across King and Snohomish Counties — a portfolio that totaled more than 2,800 homes before the company was acquired by Toll Brothers in 2011.

At CamWest, David oversaw all construction operations — coordinating trades, managing budgets, holding schedules, and maintaining the quality standard that earned the company national recognition for innovation, green building, and marketing excellence.

That scale of experience — where precision, communication, and accountability weren’t aspirations but operational requirements — is what David brings to every Island Built project, regardless of size.

Sailing the World — An Education in Judgment

After CamWest, David did something most people only dream about: he sailed around the world. A decade offshore sharpens a particular kind of judgment. You learn to read conditions before they become problems. You learn that preparation matters more than reaction. You learn that the quality of your decisions and your crew determines everything.

You also develop a design vocabulary drawn from ports, cultures, and homes around the world — an eye for what’s beautiful, what endures, and what matters. That decade shapes how David approaches every project today.

An Estate on San Juan Island — Owner-Built, Owner-Standard

David lives on San Juan Island. He built his own estate here — a custom home surrounded by a working vineyard whose fruit became SALTAIRE wine, a small estate label rooted in the salt air and cool growing conditions unique to the Salish Sea.

That project wasn’t a contractor’s side job. It was a full owner-builder endeavor: selecting the site, navigating San Juan County permitting, coordinating island trades, and finishing a home to the standard he’d demand for any client.

The tagline “As If It Were Our Own” isn’t marketing. It’s a description of how that home was built, and how yours will be.

“As If It Were Our Own.”

Island Built — David Kane

Former San Juan County Planning Commissioner

David doesn’t just build on San Juan Island — he serves it. As a former member of the San Juan County Planning Commission, he worked directly on the policies that shape how land is used and developed across the archipelago. His advocacy for protecting the farms, vineyards, and open spaces that define these islands reflects a builder who thinks carefully about what gets built, where, and why.

David understands county land use policy from the inside. He knows how the Shoreline Master Program, critical areas ordinances, and growth management framework are written, what they protect, and how to structure a project for efficient approval. For clients with waterfront parcels, sloped sites, or properties near sensitive areas, that institutional knowledge directly reduces risk and timeline.
